Kenneth Branagh Talks 'Thor,' Sequels And The Marvel Movie-Verse

'They definitely were aware and for the idea that every movie has to work on its own right,' director tells MTV News of Marvel films.

"Thor" thunders into theaters next week, adding yet another chapter to Marvel Studios' big-screen universe and bringing audiences that much closer to next year's superhero team-up extravaganza, "The Avengers."

As part of this year's Summer Movie Preview Week, MTV News spoke to "Thor" director Kenneth Branagh about taking on Marvel's hammer-wielding hero and the daunting task of integrating the god of thunder into the same world occupied by Iron Man, Hulk and — in a few months — "The First Avenger" himself, Captain America.

MTV News: So let's go back to the very early days of this project. Everyone was surprised — and pleasantly so — when your name was first announced as "Thor" director. Why did you take the job? Why did this project appeal to you?

Kenneth Branagh: I suppose it was partly that I wanted to surprise myself. I was happy to surprise a few other people. It's nice to challenge your own sense of what you think you might be able to do and other people's preconceptions. I thought that it was a total breath of fresh air, and the freshness about the whole adventure was something I'd enjoy very much. But you can't do it for just those reasons. I was drawn to the character and the story and the understanding that it would happen on an epic scale. The size of it, and the chance to tell a big — and hopefully popular — movie on a large scale was just such a very, very exciting possibility.

MTV News: Much like Iron Man was in 2008, Thor isn't all that well-known prior to his big-screen debut. One would think that this, along with his magical, godlike powers and origin story, makes the character an even harder sell for mainstream movie audiences. How did you approach that challenge?

Branagh: There's no question that everybody at Marvel felt that way, and I would have to agree with them. Although, nearly 50 years of Thor comics say there's a real fanbase for the character out there, and he's interacted with the other members of the Avengers in the comics many times. But there are many challenges to laying out a Thor origin story and letting it interconnect with the rest of the Marvel universe, which I, as a cinema viewer, am very intrigued by and enjoy. The happy coincidence was that I was certain that a large part of the movie should take part on Earth. For me, the story being partly on Earth was absolutely crucial, regardless of whether it had to fit into any other kind of movie, in order to maximize a number of things — chiefly, the humor. In the two or three months while we were talking about whether we want to make the same type of picture, that was one of the key conversations, and thank god we agreed.

MTV News: When we spoke with the "Captain America" writers, they mentioned that the central story came first, and then there was a point when they went back over the narrative and added references to the greater Marvel movie universe where appropriate. Was that the same for "Thor"? How did you handle the need to connect "Thor" with the other Marvel movies?

Branagh: Some of that was planned upfront, but to be honest, I never had to think about it too much myself, because my job and my value to the project was to keep the Thor story front and center. The rest would just organically start falling together. Sometimes it would be a case — particularly with names and things — where one could do a little blending in various places that would intersect. ... But I have to say that at no point did I feel like I had to try and guess where I was fitting into in some great Marvel wall chart of all of this. They definitely were aware and for the idea that every movie has to work on its own right — and not to assume anything — and once it's feeling secure and tight, we can have the fun stuff sprinkled throughout, and hopefully it will add some value.

MTV News: Well, the cat's out of the bag as far as Jeremy Renner's debut as Hawkeye in "Thor," so what else can you tell us about working with him and that character's role in Thor's universe?

Branagh: I'm not able to divulge anything in great detail, but the time I did spend with him was excellent. He's prepared, smart, very detailed, and what he's going to bring is something extremely interesting. He's an unusually big fan of the comics and knows the character well. There's likely to be a very, very interesting development from one film to the next with that character.

MTV News: There have been some rumors of a sequel in the works, and though nothing's official at this point, is this a world you'd like to return to down the road?

Branagh: I'm still so in the midst of the "Thor" experience that it's impossible to see anything other than simply finishing the delivery of it. We've been going around the world and getting fantastic reactions, and the thing I've been so pleased with is the number of people who have been surprised with how much they enjoyed the movie -- because it wasnt' necessarily what they expected or wasn't a character they knew. I'm also thrilled about the consistent delight in the humor of the film, and necessarily and sort of triumphantly, the emergence of Chris Hemsworth as a really significant actor here in the role of Thor. So all of those things are hugely exciting, but we only just opened in Australia, and we're opening in the UK as we speak, but given this is where we made it and where the comics come from, it's going to be phenomenally important how we do here in the U.S. So, being the Irish superstitious man that I am, I'm not going to even think about "Thor 2" until -- and if -- we are lucky enough to have the right kind of audience for "Thor 1."

Head over to MTV Splash Page for more from Kenneth Branagh on how Thor changed from comic book to screen, which scene "Avengers" director Joss Whedon was involved in and more from our "Thor" interview!

It's Summer Movie Preview Week, and MTV News will be bringing you exclusive interviews, clips and photos for the most anticipated films of the coming months. Get ready to gorge on inside looks at "Captain America," "The Hangover Part II," "X-Men: First Class," "Cowboys & Aliens" and more.

Hoodwinked Too: Hood vs. Evil

The Weinstein Company may be nowhere near the gold standard set by Pixar in the imagination and technical ability of its animation, but it beats all ten of the champion?s justifiably lauded classics in one category. Pixar has yet to produce a single film with a female hero, while ?Hoodwinked Too: Hood vs. Evil,? has two, both brave, strong, compassionate, loyal, smart, and independent.

As director Mike Disa wrote in The Huffington Post, female characters in animation ? the human ones...

Lionsgate Working with MGM to Finally Release 'Cabin in the Woods'

When MGM was caught up in crippling financial struggles, the fate of several films was left uncertain. One such tragic delay was that of The Cabin in the Woods, a horror film directed by Drew Goddard (the writer behind Cloverfield) who also wrote the film with Joss Whedon. The film was once slated for release on October 23rd of 2009, but then was pushed back for a conversion to 3D. Of course, that delay was made even longer due to MGM's aforementioned financial issues. Now the film will finally get its due diligence in theaters as Deadline says Lionsgate is in the midst of striking a deal with MGM to finally distribute the film.

Perhaps a blessing in disguise, this delay will allow one of the film's stars, Chris Hemsworth, to have his starpower help bring a bigger audience to the film now. With Thor coming out next week, it's likely ...

183. DUDE, WHERE'S MY CAR?:

Aston Kutcher & Seann William Scott star in this movie by brainless stoners for brainless stoners. I quite like the concept of two pot heads who are too wasted to remember where they parked their car end up saving the universe while they try to find it, and the "And Then" lady who works in the Chinese take-away is a flash of comic brilliance but there are very few other laughs to be had. Give me Bill and Ted any day of the week.

184. JUMANJI:

A quite imaginative and well made kids film based on the idea that board games can spring to life with real perils and hazards to be overcome. I suspect whether you like this film or not will come down to how you feel about Robin Williams - he has been known to polarise opinion. Much of the film rests on his performance so if you have any strong feelings against the actor then this probably isnt the film for you. If you are positive (or at least neutral then there is some fun to be had. The C.G. is starting to look a bit dated now but that shouldnt be a problem for young eyes.

185. CHINATOWN:

Roman Polanski directs Jack Nicholson to an excellent performance in this classic detective noir set in 1930's L.A. Quite rightly (I think) regarded as a classic for both its cinematography and its impact.

186. SEXY BEAST:

This is an edgy British gangster film (though mostly set in Spain) that uses brutal language to both disturbing and comedic effect. Casting Ray Winstone (lovable rent-a-cockney) as the retired in the sun former gangster was no great surprise but casting Ben 'Gandhi' Kingsley in the role of ultra violent psychopath was a masterstroke. From the brilliant opening scene (with the rock rolling down the hill) and for the rest of the film you are kept of balance for the rest of the film. There arent many films in this genre that are this unpredictable - and with a great script too.

187. INNERSPACE:

The hair, fashion, music and technology all scream '1980s!' but the story of a man who gets miniaturised in a submarine and injected into another mans body still feels fairly timeless. So timeless in fact that if it was made in the 1960's you could mistake the principles of the story for those of 'The Fantastic Voyage.' There is also a plot about industrial espionage tacked on to keep the story moving. In terms of both science fiction and thriller its a bit light weight but it doesnt lose its sense of fun.

Zac Efron Will Die In A Gunfight

"Live fast! Die in a crash!" yelled Ministry, and Zac Efron looks set to almost take that advice when he turns up on set for Die in a Gunfight, on its way from MRC.

Efron has been attached to the film since December, but it's just landed a director in the form of music video and commercials helmer Anthony Mandler (who's also attached to the Dracula's-early-years pic Vlad). The script, by the just-out-of-college Gabriel Ferrari and Andrew Barrer, made the 2010 blacklist, and will see Efron play "a fight-prone and death-obsessed young society man who pursues a romance with the daughter of his father's enemy."

It sounds sort of like Romeo and Juliet via Brett Easton Ellis, so while the romance is still there, maybe this is just the edgy project Efron needs to break him out of his High School Musical / Charlie St Cloud typecasting. If what he really wants to do is bust some heads, we salute him.

Scratch a Truther....

You may recall Anthony Lawson, who did a great job exposing the BS of September Clues, a Truther "No-Planes" video:

Of course, Lawson himself is a Troofer. His sole reason for debunking the no-planers was that he wanted to focus the fruitcakes on different areas of research. However, he's also something of a no-planer himself:

Well, now Lawson has revealed his thoughts about the Holocaust, and as you might expect, it's the usual:
Having been tortured, Rudolf Hss, who was the commander of Auschwitz from 1940 to 1943, almost certainly lied to save the lives of his wife and children. Even if torture and duress cannot not be proven, the overwhelming reason for recognizing the utter falsity of the Hss confession is that the gassing method he described was not scientifically plausible.

Yet Hss?s conviction has stood, by inference, as a testament to the cruelty of Germans in general, since he was tried at Nuremberg, in 1947, and subsequently hanged on April 16th, 1947, in Poland.

With great respect for those who have tried?though harassed, punished, fined, imprisoned and otherwise abused?to tell it like it really was: Arthur R. Butz, Robert Faurisson, Paul Grubach, Gerd Honsik, David Irving, Kevin Kther, Nicholas Kollerstrom, Fred Leuchter, Horst Mahler, Ingrid Rimland, Germar Rudolf, Bradley Smith, Sylvia Stolz, Fredrick Tbin, Ernst Zndel and many others.

Here's the video Lawson has put together expressing his Holocaust Denial.

New Poster: ?Transformers: Dark of the Moon?

Yesterday the first full-length trailer dropped for Transformers: Dark of the Moon. Now the poster is here, and it packs everything into the frame: Optimus, destruction, a space ship, Shia, and the film's new leading lady. I don't think there's much more to say other than that you can see the whole thing after the break.

This is cut from the classic summer movie poster mold, but at least it isn't a glowing photoshop disaster on par with the X-Men: First Class sheets. In fact, it isn't bad at all; it gets across everything it needs to. I can't imagine anyone having doubts about what this movie has to offer, but after seeing this poster those doubts would be as obliterated as Chicago's streets in the film.

'American Idol' In 60 Seconds: Casey Abrams' Last Showmance

The Carole King songbook results in Abrams' second elimination of the season.
By Jim Cantiello

Casey Abrams and Haley Reinhart
Photo: FOX

This week on "American Idol," the top six sang from the Carole King songbook, but the real theme of the night was showmances: Casey and Haley! Lauren and Scotty! Lauren and ... this dude [random audience guy]! Lauren and Steven Tyler! [Clip of Steven Tyler with a little blond toddler on his lap.] Damn, girl, are you trying to audition for "The Real World" or something?

But if we're talking musical promiscuity, Casey Abrams was the real "Hi De Ho." Pianos, trumpets, saxes, harmonicas ... The only thing he didn't hook up with was a melody.

Sit, Ubu, sit! Good dog. [Footage of Casey screaming plays with the sound of the Ubu "bark" from that '80s sitcom vanity plate.]

James Durbin had his best week yet but the brightest star on "Idol" was crazy Penny Marshall. [Jim is in a blond wig and sunglasses]. She is my inspiration.

I want to be her friend, I want to be Scotty's friend, and I really want to be Haley's fu-uh-riend, too.

Yo, Randy, why don't we "turn the other cheek" to Thursday night's results show, where Jimmy Iovine gave his two cents, and Haley told him where he could shove his two cents!

[Clip: Seacrest introduces Crystal Bowersox, but then the camera cuts to a burly male harmonica player.]

Whoa, Crystal really let herself go, didn't she? But Arrested Development hasn't aged a bit! [Footage of Bruno Mars and his 45-piece backing band, who were all sitting on a couch.]

And results!

There's your fake bottom three [the last contestants standing], there's your real bottom three [Lauren, Casey and Jacob sitting on the couch from earlier in the episode].

[Jim holds out a microphone as if he's a sports reporter on the field after the Super Bowl.] Hey, Casey Abrams! You just got cut from "Idol" for the second time. What are you going to do now?

[Jim shouts in a Casey voice.] "I'm going to Creepy World!" [Footage of him grabbing girls by the back of the neck and pulling them in for a kiss during his farewell performance.]

Ding!

New X-Men: First Class Trailer Arrives

After yesterday?s badly Photoshopped poster incident, it?s a great pleasure to bring to you another international trailer for Matthew Vaughn?s take on the much-loved comic book franchise, X-Men: First Class.

Early on, much of it is stuff we?ve seen before ? establishing that yes, yes indeed, James McAvoy?s Professor X was bezzie mates with Michael Fassbender?s Erik Lehnsherr / Magneto ? but then halfway through things kick up a gear.

Banshee flies in to say hello, Azazel gets more screentime to kill people with his tail, and Erik dons his new (old) helmet and generally makes metal fly about the place.

In other words, this is further proof that it?s well worth getting excited about this new prequel and you probably ought to start drawing James McAvoy's face over the June 1 page in your diaries. You know, because X-Men: First Class is out then. As you might have guessed. Ahem.

The world has royal wedding fever. On Friday morning (April 29), Prince William and Catherine (Kate) Middleton tied the knot with millions of eyes on them. And, immediately, Hollywood began reacting to the lavish nuptials on Twitter.

Victoria Beckham, one of the wedding's guests, even put her two cents in, giving fans an inside view of the fairytale-like ceremony. "London looks beautiful!!!" she shared. "We are so proud to be British! X VB x."

The pregnant singer attended the wedding in a loose-fitting navy gown, with a fancy hat atop her head. She was joined by her hubby, David Beckham, who wore a very formal tux. The pair spoke to UsMagazine.com about the wedding. "Today's ceremony was beautiful and heartfelt," he said. "Catherine looked wonderfully elegant, and we were honored to be part of such a special, historical day for our country."

They were not the only celebs in attendance, however. Elton John and David Furnish, Guy Ritchie and Joss Stone also managed to snatch an invite.

MTV's very own DJ Pauly D joked that he would be providing the beats at the wedding, tweeting, "Djin The #RoyalWedding !!!!#DJPaulyDSwagg #londonSwagg."

Some celebs who didn't make the guest list decided to send the couple their well-wishes on Twitter. Miley Cyrus tweeted, "wow wow wow #royalwedding soooo romantic. FLAWLESS. How lucky is Kate? Its every girls dream to be a princess. Harry??? haha jkjk."

Katy Perry got into the spirit by painting the monarchy on her nails. She wrote, "In honor of the Royal Wedding, I present you... My royal NAILS! CONGRATS!"

Emma Bunton, who met the royal family back in her Spice Girls days, added, "Absolutely beautiful couple!!! They look exquisite!"

British pop chanteuse Estelle said, "This is def a marriage for our generation (brits) I feel like they had a chance to do it RIGHT." She added, "Top hats and fascinaters, This wedding was gorgeous. Just. Gorgeous."

Sony Pictures Animation Gains 'Instant Karma' with Fantasy Comedy

It seems kind of ironic that a project called Instant Karma picked up by New Line Cinema back in 2003 because anything but a quickly put together project, but that's Hollywood for ya. However, Heat Vision reports the project has life again with Sony Pictures Animation picking up the fantasy comedy about a misguided safecracker from New Orleans who dies but suddenly finds himselfreincarnated as a fly. As the hero does good deeds to improve his karma, hemoves up the food chain through a variety of animals, such as a frog, raccoon and dog, trying to get back to his human body and the woman heloves.

This sounds a little bit like The Incredible Mr. Limpet (which has a remake in development with Richard Linklater potentially at the helm). Honestly, the story sounds intriguing, but I wish it wasn't a live-action CG hybrid. Sony Pictures Animation has actually impressed me ...

Great Movie of 2011 #7: OF GODS AND MEN (DES HOMMES ET DES DEAUX)

Of all the categories in the Academy Awards, I think Best Foreign Language Film is the one that has disappointed me the most in the past few years. Some of their choices of winner in recent years ? The Secret In Their Eyes, Departures, Tsotsi ? have been medium quality films that have won at the expense of more deserving nominees. And given that this film, Of Gods And Men didn?t even make the final five, my lack of respect for the small committee (mostly old men) that decide this category is growing.

For this is a superbly constructed film, about a community of monks in Algeria forced to make hard decisions because of a group of terrorists camped out nearby the monastery. It explores the themes of religion and faith without bias or agenda, but simply through observation and facts it makes you think deeply about them. It manages to draw you in to the experience of living in a close closed community like this. And it strikes the heart deeply, with the stoic rationalism of the head monk contrasted with the very human foibles of the other men.

Thus s based on a true story and, without wanting to spoil the movie, I will say that the ending can?t be anything but affecting. This was a great selection for the official French entry into the Oscar race, even if strategically (given the shallowness of the jury) it wasn?t the best chance of winning.

(Other great 2011 movies: Another Year, Black Swan, Never Let Me Go, 127 Hours, Rabbit Hole, Rubber)

Throats and things (FD)

I'm still not feeling 100%. My throat still hurts a lot - especially if I try to eat anything that isn't soft mushy stuff - and I'm still coughing a fair bit (especially at night). But I think I'm starting to get a bit better, and should - I hope - be completely better soon.

Good news though... Despite not going out for walks - due to being banned from doing so by both Mam and Kelly until I'm better - I was expecting to end up gaining weight this past week. That's not what happened though. I lost 5lbs! I'm assuming the mostly liquid diet is responsible for that? I mean, my meals have involved Ready Brek (a runny oatmeal meant for children, but which I love), Weetabix, ice-cream, yogurts, and the ocasional other soft meal (like soup, scrambled eggs, etc). I did try and eat a bit of toast the other day, but it hurt too much, so I gave the toast to Kero and had a yogurt instead. Anyway, I'm pleased about the 5lbs weight loss. Hopefully I wont put much - if anything - on when I can finally eat normal foods.

Dad was meant to come for a visit Friday. We were going to watch movies, and he was going to be having dinner with me. But because I wasn't well we cancelled his visit.

I'm hoping to get to your blogs soon... Being unwell has put me quite a way behind though, so if it takes me a while to get to your blog, but you see I've been visiting others, it's nothing personal... It just means I haven't gotten to yours yet.

Cine Las Americas kicks off Thursday

Cine Las Americas, the Austin film festival that has been showcasing the best of Latin cinema for more than a decade, kicks off Thursday night with a screening of “Marimbas From Hell,” directed by Julio Hernandez Cordon.

“Marimbas” will screen at 7 p.m. Thursday at the Alamo South. Individual tickets $12.

Here’s a mini-review, written by Joe Gross, to give you an early look at the opening-night film. Look for full coverage of the festival Friday in the Movies section.

In this slight but often smartly-deadpan feature, marimba player Don Alfonso (played by real-life marimba player Alfonso Tunché) has hit a bad streak - he is the victim of extortion, his family has gone into hiding, his old band is angry at him for going solo, and he just lost his job as a playing a restaurant.

Increasingly desperate, he hooks up with his slightly thuggish, glue-addicted godson Chiquilín (Víctor Hugo Monterroso, who nearly walks away with the movie) and they decide to join the marimba’s traditional Guatemalan sound with a metal band, a crew lead by a local metal legend named Blacko González (yes, that is his real nickname, and yes, it is awesome). As you might expect, Alfonso is hard to hear.

Cordon stumbled onto the story while filming his last movie, “Gasolina,” and the opening scene is documentary footage of Tunché explaining an actual problem he had with local criminals.

Cordon spun this into a poker-faced comedy using non-actors, carefully working within their limitations (and his own - that camera sure doesn’t move much). Tunché looks slightly baffled the whole time, as if tracing his life, wondering how he got here. Any struggling artist can relate.

IRL: Man Shot While Filming Deadpool Fan Series

[1]

There's suffering for your art, and then there's suffering for your art as a result of your own lack of common sense. 23-year-old Columbus manSam Vestey was recently shot in the leg by accident while making an amateur Deadpool web series with a couple of friends. Read more after the jump.

Vestey and his friends Casey May and Michael Galusick were filming a scene for their fan-made Deadpool series in the basement of a house when a real gun they were using as a prop fired and struck Vestey in the leg. The men had used the gun for previous projects, and had believed it to be unloaded. While we don't know which of the men was holding the gun at the time when it went off, it's clear it was an accident.Said Vestey in an interview [2], "As he was holding it, it slipped from his hands and when he reached for it, it caught the trigger and it discharged into my leg."

Vestey acknowledges that all things considered, he got off very easily. No criminal charges have been filed as a result of the incident, and Vestey appears to harbor no hard feelings. In fact, Vestey has said that he would be open to appearing in another episode of the series.

Vestey's story serves as a PSA to reiterate what all filmmakers, amateur and otherwise -- or hell, all people, everywhere, in general -- should already know: firearms are very fucking dangerous and should never be pointed at anything you don't intend to shoot. Prop guns exist for a reason. Use them.

While we don't have footage of the actual shooting (that's probably for the best), I was able to dig up an old episode of the Deadpool series in question. Hit up Galusick's YouTube page [3] to see more, and judge for yourself whether they're awesome enough to be worth getting shot in the leg for. (My opinion: No, but then again, what is?)

Antje Traue Also Fighting Superman

antje-traue.jpg Don't worry, Michael Shannon, you won't be alone out there in your fight against Superman. According to Variety, aiding The Man of Steel's General Zod in his war on truth/justice/Americana will be Antje Traue, a German actress last seen in Pandorum. She'll be playing Faora, the supposed basis of Superman II's Ursa and a character that shown up in multiple, varied incarnations. One Faora was a Kryptonian man-hater, whose skill at pressure-point martial arts made her a formidable opponent to any who tried to force her into a patriarchy, but the article seems to think she'll be playing a latter Faora--an orphaned metahuman from the fictional country of Pokolistanian who aided the General using her power to disrupt molecular bonds. Either way, best watch your "Zod's rod" jokes from here out, Zod.

Kris Allen Picks Casey Abrams, Haley Reinhart As 'American Idol' Faves

Season-eight champ says performing on 'Idol' stage again is 'definitely a possibility.'
By Kara Warner, with reporting by Jim Cantiello

This week's "Idol Party Live" featured season-eight "American Idol" champ Kris Allen, via a pre-taped Skype interview with surprise guest Matthew Morrison, when they announced details about their collaboration for the "Glee" star's upcoming solo debut. Later, Cantiello caught up with Allen live to discuss his favorite current "Idol" contestants and his guest appearance on the show last week.

"I have been keeping up a little bit," Allen said when asked to name his favorite contestants of season 10. "I would say probably my favorites are, I really like Casey [Abrams], and I really like Haley [Reinhart]. I like Lauren too, though."

Regarding his visit to the "Idol" studio last week — not as a performer, but as an audience member — Allen said he was there to support the show and would love to perform someday if he has something to promote.

"There was talk about [performing]," Allen said. "Here's the deal: I don't want to perform unless there's something to perform, some new song. It could happen. It's definitely a possibility, but I wouldn't bank on it [this season]."

Allen said he's always happy to visit the show that jump-started his music career. "It's always nice to be back. It feels like home a little bit," he said. "It's nice to talk to all those people, the producers, meet the contestants — it's a good time."

Another subject that came up was former judge Kara DioGuardi's new book, in which she compared Allen and fellow contestant Adam Lambert's performance of her song "No Boundaries" to watching a plane fall from the sky.

"Was she reading my mind at the time?" Allen joked in response to hearing DioGuardi's comment. "She knew the song was not incredible and it was going to be rough. I don't even know what it was, it was just hard to sing. It felt like it was meant for Kara."

Don't miss "Idol Party Live" every Thursday at noon on MTV.com for analysis, celebrity guests and even some karaoke — get in the conversation by tweeting with the hashtag #idolparty! Sony Animation to Develop ?Instant Karma? as Live-Action/CGI Hybrid

After being in development for almost a decade, Instant Karma is finally on its way to seeing the light of day. The project has just about run the gamut of movie studios, starting off at DreamWorks Pictures before moving on to Universal Pictures and Imagine Entertainment, and then eventually landing at New Line Cinema in 2003. They came very close to getting the film together, even going as far as to line up a voice cast that included Dwayne Johnson, Pierce Brosnan, Gene Wilder, Mira Sorvino and Eartha Kitt, among others. But the project kept getting picked up out of turnaround, and has now been acquired by Sony Pictures Animation.

So what is this mystery project that keeps generating interest among studios but can't seem to find a steady home?

The plot of the film, as detailed by The Hollywood Reporter [1], centers on a safecracker in New Orleans who finds himself reincarnated as a fly after suffering a near-death experience. Its title refers to what comes next: The more he performs good deeds, the sooner he's able to move up the food chain and turn into different animals, such as a frog,a raccoon and a dog. Realizing that this is the only way to get back his human body and to rejoin the woman he loves, he tries his best to keep up the good behavior.

Planned as a hybrid of live-action and CGI, the comedy fantasy project stems from an original script by Sky High co-writer Paul Hernandez, who is also attached to direct. (Apparently the decade-long wait hasn't deterred him.) Producing the picture are Ted Elliott and Terry Rossio, the screenwriters & producers of the Pirates of the Caribbean films.

Hopefully this will be the last time Instant Karma lands at a new studio, because I'm greatly looking forward to seeing what Sony Pictures Animation can do with the concept. Though they haven't been active for long, their third feature film effort -- Cloudy with a Chance of Meatballs -- was glowing proof that they're capable of creating startlingly witty and vibrantly energetic family films, and I'd love to see them continue the trend. (It may be some time before we see anything for the film though, since Sony Animation already has a couple of other projects in development, such as the kids fairy tale [2] Muncle Trogg and the Robert Zemeckis-produced [3] How to Survive a Garden Gnome Attack.)

Renner Joins Ice Age: Continental Drift

While he seems to be loading his schedule with high profile projects recently, Jeremy Renner is also finding time to have a little fun, agreeing to voice a character in the fourth Ice Age outing, Continental Drift. And he?s not alone: Jennifer Lopez, Keke Palmer, Wanda Sykes, Aziz Ansari and hip-hop singer Drake are also aboard.

Though most of the new characters weren?t revealed at a meeting for likely promotional partners at 20th Century Fox. Renner?s playing Gutt, described by the Hollywood Reporter as ?a self-styled master of the high seas.? Lopez is Shira, a sexy sabre tooth who wins the heart of Denis Leary?s Diego.

The new arrivals are joining the established ensemble, which includes Leary, John Leguizamo, Ray Romano, Queen Latifah, Seann William Scott and Josh Peck.

You can see the appeal of the Ice Age movies ? not only has the trilogy released to date earned nearly $2 billion, but it?s a fairly swift gig for most of the cast, with just a few recording sessions spread out over several months. Plus Fox and Blue Sky are clearly happy to keep going back to the well ? the companies are planning a Christmas TV special and tie-in games for both mobile devices and the ?net.

Ice Age: Continental Drift itself is out on July 6 next year.
