On this day in 2006...

Today is the anniversary of when I started my blog, and I wanted to write something meningful to thank my friends for being there for me through all the hard times; losing my sight, losing my Oriental cat, Myskanco "Chance" Silva flame, and all the other losses. And through all the happy times too. But I've been trying to do it for more than half an hour so far, and I just can't find the words. So, instead, I'll say this: On this day in 2006, I started this blog. In that time I've made a lot of friends. Some of them have turned out not to be who I thought they were; some have turned out to be wonderful friends.

To those who turned out not to be who I thought they were: lies and deception get you nowhere in life, and I can only hope you will some day learn the error of your ways, and in doing so that you will turn over a new leaf and - perhaps - find it in yourself to be the person I thought you were.

To those who turned out to be wonderful friends: Thank you! Thank you for being there for me when I needed a friend, and for... Well, for being you!

?The Muppets? Strange Teaser Poster

When we saw the logo [1] for Disney's upcoming The Muppets it looked just about right. Now a reader-snapped image of the film's first teaser poster has hit AICN and it looks, well, kinda weird. Check out a slightly bigger version after the break.

It's strange to see most of the Muppets in full-body form. And the tagline (really? that's the tagline?), poses and lighting all make this look more like Muppets from M. Night Shyamalan than from Jason Segel. I'm going on the belief that this is real, and the hope that Disney will quickly move on to a more Muppet-friendly design.

On vacation in Los Angeles, Walter, the world?s biggest Muppet fan, and his friends Gary (Jason Segel) and Mary (Amy Adams) from Smalltown, USA, discover the nefarious plan of oilman Tex Richman (Chris Cooper) to raze the Muppet Theater and drill for the oil recently discovered beneath the Muppets? former stomping grounds. To stage The Greatest Muppet Telethon Ever and raise the $10 million needed to save the theater, Walter, Mary and Gary help Kermit reunite the Muppets, who have all gone their separate ways: Fozzie now performs with a Reno casino tribute band called the Moopets, Miss Piggy is a plus-size fashion editor at Vogue Paris, Animal is in a Santa Barbara clinic for anger management, and Gonzo is a high-powered plumbing magnate. With secret, signature, celebrity cameos, ?The Muppets? hits the big screen Nov. 23, 2011.

Cannes 2011: Alex's First Video Blog & Updates from the Film Fest!

This is the year, the year I think I've been waiting for, the vintage year at the Cannes Film Festival that I knew was one day coming. We've only just finished Day 2 (it's currently Friday morning here in France) and I've only seen four films so far, but everything has been absolutely parfait so far. For those who don't speak French, that means "perfect". My travel here, the films I've seen, the experience so far, even the apartment we rented to stay in (with Eric from IONCinema) has been better than ever before. And I'm hoping it'll only get even better as the fest continues. How are the films I've seen? All but one of them I thoroughly enjoyed.

I love Cannes. It grows on me every year. Last year was rough, to be frank, the line-up was pretty bad, but this year is making up for it. We've still ...

Celebs Hop to the ATX for Easter

This weekend was a busy one for celeb spotting in Austin.

The owner of Annie's West mentioned to a contact that Audrina Patridge was at the West 6th bar on Friday night...but wasn't 100% sure if it was her. Let me know if YOU saw her.

Drew Barrymore was spotted at the "Gucci Goodwill" on Lake Austin Blvd. on Saturday with her bf Will. They were shopping for lake attire. Drew recently purchased a house on the lake.

Matthew McConaughey was spotted at Sun City Community Church for Easter service with his brother, mom and mom's significant other.

Did I miss anyone???

"The War at Home": history of the Vietnam era protests at the University of Wisconsin

An older documentary from First Run Features, ?The War at Home?, directed by Glenn Silber and Gary Alexander Brown, traces the anti-Vietnam-war movement at the University of Wisconsin in the 1960s, culminating in the explosion at Sterling Hall in August, 1970, as a protest against the Army Map Service.  The film was originally released in 1980 by the Wisconsin Educational Television Network.

But what?s interesting is how the sentiment built up that people who worked for companies or worked or military civilian agencies were personally responsible for the wrongs supposedly being committed in Vietnam.  An earlier part of the film covers protests against Dow.

The film does cover the draft, and mentions that students who got good grades remained deferred, while those who didn?t could become the fodder of war.  Mandatory conscription was a major factor in the lives of young men of that day.

It also says that President Nixon?s ?Vietnamization? was clever because it would lower American casualties while still continuing the war for a while, with increased aerial bombardment.

I remember my stop in Madison on Labor Day, 1997, as I drove out to Minneapolis in a corporate transfer.

I attended the University of Kansas from 1966-1968, when I finished my MA in January before getting ?drafted? myself.  I had a professor, in Numerical Analysis, from Wisconsin, who was my thesis advisor. I remember that he thought that the atmosphere in Lawrence was quieter (and winter weather warmer) than in Madison.

Some of the Sterling Hall incident remains unsolved today.

The film could serve as a companion piece to Sony's "The Fog of War

Things I could have said yesterday (FD)

I took a couple more photos of Emma-Jane on Tuesday while I had her on my own. I didn't mention them yesterday because I wasn't sure if I'd managed to get her in any of them. Apparently I had though, so here they are:

First, here she is sat in her highchair enjoying a sausage roll:

And here she is sat on the floor playing:

The doll is one I got her Tuesday. It only cost 2 (about $4) and she seemed to really like it - I showed it to her in the shop, and we got quite a way around the shop before she let go of it, and then I think it was only because she noticed the Eeyore dangling from the bag I had round my waist - so I "had to" get it for her. I was pleased to see she was still interested enough in it to want to play with it when we got home (well, back to Mam's place). It was definately worth the 2 it cost!

Soon after I took that photo, she put the doll in the little pushchair she has there and was pushing it about. It was so cute! I didn't try to get a photo of that though... It's hard enough getting photos of her when she's staying still, so I didn't think I'd have much luck - if any - when she was on the move! ;)

***

We've had beautiful weather most days. The odd light shower (like late Monday, I think it was) and the odd bit of really cold wind (like yesterday's rather chilly wind). But mostly it's been quite nice here. Warm and sunny, but not too hot... That's how it's been most of the time. Nice enough to be outside, but not hot enough to make you feel uncomfortable or anything... Just how I like it! :)

***

For now at least I wont be doing the "Furkid Friday" posts every week. I'm finding that either I have nothing new to post for them - either because I already mentioned it when I did my own posts, or because nothing happened worth mentioning - or I forget to mention stuff because it happened earlier in the week and by Friday I don't remember to add itt to the post. Anyway, when either Kero or Gwydion have anything worth posting I'll do a post from them, otherwise it will be mentioned in my posts (depending on if it's just usual day to day things, or something interesting that's worth doing from their point of view). In the meantime, here's a photo that was taken of Kero a couple of weeks back, but which I never got around to posting:

***

I gained 1lb this past week. Can't say I'm surprised about that. Actually, I expected to have gained more than that. Thing is, it was only last week I was able to fully eat "normal" food again after my throat being so sore, plus the fact that most of what I ate last week was... Well, let's just say it wasn't healthy! Anyway, when I weighed on Monday I discovered I'd put 1lb back on. But, that's OK! I mean, this is the first gain of any sort I've had, and... Well, I did lose the last 7lbs quite quickly. Not to mention the fact that - as I said - with what I'd been eating (mostly involving pizza, chips/fries and chocolate) I actually deserved to have gained more than 1lb. I'd like to say I've been doing better so far this week, but... *Sigh*... I really haven't! We had take-away on Monday, because it was Kelly's birthday, then I had the McDonalds breakfast, a donut and a whole lot of chocolate on Tuesday, and there was more chocolate yesterday... The chocolate is all eaten now though, so at least that's out of the way. And now I need to get back on track with my eating, and get back to eating the things I know I should be eating.

***

I've gotten a lot of those posts labelled. I've only got about 450 posts left to label. Yeah, that might sound like a lot, but when you think about the number of posts I've published, and the pile - now complete with labels - waiting to be published... Well, suddenly 450 left to label sounds like a nice, small number! I'm hoping to get some more of them done in these next few days. I'm at a point where I really can't wait for them to be over and done with though! I got through about 1200 of them, then started wondering what made me think this was a good idea. I almost decided to forget it, but then I reminded myself of how many I'd done, and I thought about the fact that there would now be more to go through and remove labels from than there were left to label. I also thought about the fact that once I start something I like to finish it, and - despite the fact part of me is wishing I wasn't doing this (not least because reading some of the old posts is far from enjoyable) - I'm going to finish what I started, and I'm going to get labels on all my posts!

***

OK, this will do for today.

I hope that everyone is happy, healthy, safe and warm! If you aren't... Then consider positive thoughts sent in your direction! And a few hugs too!

Amityville Gets A New Legacy

Thinkin' they won't? Goddammit, they will. Following eight original instalments and a 2005 remake with Ryan Reynolds, Hannibal Classics have just announced yet another Amityville Horror, this time in the form of The Amityville Legacy 3D.

This one stems from the novel Amityville: The Evil Escapes by John G Jones, who wrote a number of continuations following Jay Anson's franchise-founding original book. It's already been the basis for two other films in the series, the TV movie The Evil Escapes, and 1992's DTV It's About Time.

Thankfully, we can rest assured that Legacy will not revolve around a possessed lamp, with Hannibal's lengthy (and spoilerific) synopsis describing six priests performing a traumatic exorcism, before the story flashes forward thirty years, and the unsuspecting Evans family move in to the house on the hill (y'all). You can probably infer the rest.

"The Amityville Legacy 3D reinvigorates a classic franchise with astonishing scares, dazzling set-pieces, and twists that will leave audiences shocked and hungry for more," it says here. Big talk, but we appreciate the sheer positive thinking of "classic franchise".

No director or cast yet, but the screenplay is by Andrew Helm and Steve B Harris, with Paul Mason (the 2005 Amityville Horror) and Richard Rionda Del Castro (Give Em Hell Malone) producing. Shooting is pencilled in for the autumn, with a Hallowe'en 2012 release planned.

Walken & Rourke Join Seven Psychopaths

Walken & Rourke Join Seven Psychopaths
With Colin Farrell and Sam Rockwell

Walken & Rourke Join Seven Psychopaths

Great news for fans of the already-classic In Bruges: writer/director Martin McDonagh is reuniting with Colin Farrell for Seven Psychopaths, which is also set to star Christopher Walken, Sam Rockwell and Mickey Rourke.

Not a tale of masterless nutcases protecting a village from a warlord, this is instead about a screenwriter (Farrell), struggling with a script, and, for inspiration, hanging out with his friends Walken and Rockwell, who operate a dog-kidnapping scam. Dark hilarity ensues, especially when the trio snatch a hound belonging to none-too-happy gangster Rourke.

We'll say it again: this is coming from the mind that brought us In Bruges, so expectations will be stratospherically high and fingers painfully crossed that Seven Psychopaths can deliver the same level of violent deadpan comedy as previously witnessed. The odds seem good, with behind-the-scenes Bruges alumni Graham Broadbent, Pete Czernin and Tessa Ross all returning for the new adventure.

If there are seven major cast slots to fill, then there are still three yet to go. Would it be too much to hope that Brendan Gleeson and Ralph Fiennes could be two of them? Can the team catch that Bruges lightning in the bottle again? Here's hoping it turns out to be beautiful, like a facking fairytale. Production company HanWay are currently shopping the project around Cannes.

Documentary About Kids Doing Musical 'Star Wars' Makes Case for Nerd Reproduction

star-wars-kids-musical.jpg Want to watch some cute kids putting on a musical production of Star Wars? Sure you do; you aren't an evil jinn, are you? OK, then, so watch this trailer for an in-production documentary about just such a thing. The preview was put together to raise the $8000 the directors needed to finish editing, and now that they've got that, they're hoping to get a couple more thousand in their Kickstarter account before Monday to pay for an original score--not to mention whatever they're going to need to fight George Lucas's inevitable lawsuit. Maybe pass over a few bones once you see how obviously adorable kids running around in Star Wars costumes is.

"The Expendables": Stallone's big "B Movie"; history says he's on the wrong continent

OK, the CIA will hire a mercenary team to be sacrificed for a mission it doesn?t anything officially to do with.  The premise seems a bit B-movie-ish in this gaudy production from Lionsgate directed by Sylvester Stallone, ?The Expendables.?  And they aren't "The Incredibles".

Arnold Schwarzenegger makes an uncredited appearance as ?Trench?, and Bruce Willis as the mysterious Mr. Church.   The rest of the cast is reasonably familiar: Jason Statham, Jet Li, Eric Roberts.

The premise of the film reminds me a bit of ?Collateral Damage?, a 2001 action film whose release was delayed after 9/11.  Here, the bad guys run a drug kingdom on an island off South America (which could have set up a premise like ?The Most Dangerous Game?, although here it's mostly brawn, not brains). Appearing late in 2010, the film scenario seems out of place given what has happened this year in the Middle East (largely because of social media), where one really can imagine a scenario like this being set up (even in Libya).

The film was shot in Louisiana and Brazil.

Lionsgate UK has a summary site for the film here. It can be rented ?legally? from YouTube for $3.99. More studios should do this.

Scott Rudin & 'Terrorist Search Engine' are Targeting Jesse Eisenberg

Though he may not have taken home the big prize for Best Picture at the Academy Awards with the fantastic film The Social Network, there's no denying producer Scott Rudin still hit a homerun with the story of Facebook. Now Rudin is looking to team with the film's star Jesse Eisenberg yet again. Vulture reports the producer has just optioned Wesley Yang's article from New York Magazine called The Terrorist Search Engine which profiles controversial counterterrorism expert witness Evan Kohlmann. If that doesn't mean a thing to you, it might be easier to say that he has been dubbed "the Doogie Howser of Terrorism."

An FBI agent gave Kohlmann that moniker when he was just 23-years old as he has helped convict 23 defendants in federal courts and Guantnamo Bay tribunals with his expert witness testimony. Apparently he's so good at testifying, it has become his principal ...

"Pandemic: Facing AIDS" documents the worldwide epidemic as of 2003

The documentary ?Pandemic: Facing AIDS? (2004), directed by Rory Kennedy and directed by Mike Bailey, traces the worldwide epidemic in five countries: Brazil, India, Thailand, Russia, and Uganda.
For most of the film, it?s largely a heterosexual disease; and why this is so in the less developed world was a mystery in the early years; but surely it has a lot to do with the fact that women in the third world are more likely to have other STD?s that facilitate spread.

The Uganda section deals with heterosexual spread, and the need for fidelity; it isn?t apparent here that the anti-gay legislation before the Uganda parliament will come up.

There is a gay man in the Brazil section, who talks about the disapproval of others; his own family is not as disapproving as most others.

The official website from Moxie Firecracker films is here.

Danny Glover and Elton John narrate.

The film was produced with HBO and the DVD carries the imprint DocuRama.

Check This Out: Revised US Poster for Richard Ayoade's 'Submarine'

A comedy that doesn't let principles stand in the way of progress. Wow, what a tagline, if that can even called a tagline. ComingSoon has debuted another new official US poster for Richard Ayoade's fantastic indie Submarine, which we've been raving about since the Toronto Film Fest last year. Yes, we've seen this exact poster before, last year, but this is a revised version with some new quotes and a slightly different arrangement. I'm featuring it not because I'm that big of a fan of the design, but because this indie needs all the attention it can get. I love this film. Make sure not to miss it once it's released this summer! See below.

"Water for Elephants": Pattinson's character is almost too nice to make it, but an intelligent pachyderm helps

?Water for Elephants? starts with encapsulation, as did ?Dr. Zhivago.?  An elderly Jacob (Hal Holbrook, the older ?sentinel? from NBC?s ?The Event?),  is ?stranded? at a circus and is to be offered a ride to his ?nursing home?  (compare to ?Win Win? and ?The Evening Sun?).  But he is determined that his life is not in a final endgame, and tells the story of his coming of age.

Young Jacob (Robert Pattinson) is taking his veterinary finals at Cornell in 1931 when he is called out of the exam because of the death of his parents in a car crash.  Left in debt, he is not  immediately able to finish his studies (that doesn't seem too convincing, but is needed to generate the story) and jumps on a train to join the circus as a veterinarian.

To survive, he has to accept the world where, as lead animal trainer August (Christopher Waltz) says, ?we live by tricks.?  His honest and gentle nature must accept a world where social manipulation means everything.  Gradually, he makes himself invaluable (after initial resentment as a ?college boy? and almost being thrown off the train for his ?honesty?), and winds up protecting Marlena (Reese Witherspoon), August?s wife.  Eventually he meets Rosie the elephant, and his befriending her (and the animal?s superior intelligence) feeds the climax of the backstory, which is telescoped, but includes the animals being let loose.   This is toward the end of Prohibition, and ?water? and moonshine can become interchangeable.

The film, from 20th Century Fox, is directed by Francis Lawrence and was shot in Tennessee (it's supposed to take place in New York State).  The period-piece CGI is effective, but not on the level of, say, the Harry Potter movies.  But I loved the steam train sequences.

The movie script tends to focus on "crisis" and cliffhanger situations, which is something screenwriting gurus (and symposiums) say is necessary, although I disagree.

Pattinson is so much the ?perfect male? that you don?t want anything to happen to him. Yet, in one scene, he does drag.

Robert De Niro and Diane Keaton Heading 'Gently Down the Stream'

The two previously appeared in the same film in what most would call their heyday with The Godfather Part II in 1974, and would work together again in Marvin's Room in 1996. Now Robert De Niro and Diane Keaton are set to reunite in the indie comedy Gently Down the Stream. The story sees the two veteran actors playing a long-divorced couple who, for the sake of their adopted son's wedding and his biological mother, pretend they are still married. They quickly learn that acting the part isn't easy, especially when their past, present and future unravel for all to see. Who knows the embarrassing arguments they'll have?

Variety reports Justin Zackham, the man behind the sappy film The Bucket List, another film that teamed two well-seasoned actors together in quite a melodramatic fashion, will write and direct the film. In addition, apparently Katherine Heigl and Amanda Seyfried ...

Sibel Edmonds: Jews Run the USA

I'm shocked, shocked, I tell you to learn that Sibel is parroting the usual anti-Semitic tropes.
Are the elections results of US presidential elections determined by 2% of the population? Can the five million or so Jewish population be counted as the US majority? Does the Israel lobby shape the majority of US voters? decisions? Is Israel the main determinant of political elections? results when it comes to high US public offices? I don?t know your take or answers to these questions, but we do have ?theirs, on the record, loud and clear, and of course, delivered with hubris and cockiness:

Her proof? Well, an article in the Jerusalem Post notes that some rabbi in Israel claims that Obama's reelection depends on whether or not he releases Israeli spy Jonathan Pollard from prison.

Of course, the rabbi is blowing it out his hindquarters. For one thing, Bill Clinton and George W. Bush managed to get reelected without releasing Pollard. Indeed, Sibel acknowledges this in the comments, but look how she phrases it:
For example: Pollard remained inside through several presidents, and ?some? got reelected;-)

"Some"? Sibel is clearly trying to imply that the one that didn't, George Bush, Sr., lost because he failed to pardon Pollard. Never mind that, as Wikipedia's page on Pollard notes, the first Israeli effort to free Pollard came during Clinton's first term.

Sibel goes on to make the usual claim about how the Jews control the media:
Click here if you want to read the report detailing how ?they? successfully control, direct and shape American media.

Wikileaks Shocker: al Qaeda Behind 9/11

OK, it is sort of a man bites dog story, despite the release of thousands of classified documents, not a single one of them provides anything to show that 9/11 was an inside job. In fact, quite the opposite.

Mohammed boasted in the documents that the "planes operation" of Sept. 11 was his "dream and life's work." A Pakistani raised in Kuwait, he was captured in March 2003, and later was waterboarded 183 times to get him to talk.

He described a plan to build remote-controlled firing devices disguised as Sega video-game cartridges. He began preparations for bombing "the tallest building in California" ? presumably the Los Angeles library tower, "using at least two separate shoe bombs to gain access to the cockpit."

He wanted to hit CIA and FBI headquarters and nuclear-power plants, hack into U.S. bank computers and hijack U.S. cargo planes. He discussed natural-gas explosions he wanted to set off in Chicago and researched "the feasibility of an operation to set fire to a hotel or gas station" there.

Mohammed's right-hand man was Ramzi Binalshibh the "9/11 coordinator."

According to the documents, Binalshibh learned from lead Sept. 11 hijacker Mohammed Atta that the "the targets were the World Trade Center, the Pentagon and the Capitol," sites selected by Osama bin Laden, and that the al-Qaida leader told the hijackers that "if they could not reach their targets, they were to simply to crash the aircraft." It has long been in dispute whether the plane that crashed in Pennsylvania was headed for the Capitol or the White House.

Full Clip from ?Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides?

With all the talk about Fast Five's huge opening weekend and Thor's big international box office haul, not to mention that film's impending domestic opening, it's almost as if the next blockbuster on the summer movies horizon is being overlooked. That film is Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides, the Rob Marshall-directed fourth film in the Pirates saga, starring Johnny Depp, Ian McShane, Penelope Cruz and Geoffrey Rush. As the May 20th, 3D release approaches, Disney has begun the full on, cannon's blazing, Pirates of the Caribbean marketing barrage. Along with all the trailers, commercials, interviews and featurettes, though, Yahoo Movies has an especially cool one minute clip of an action scene from early in the film.

Here's the clip from Yahoo Movies [1] called "Palace Escape."

Not too much to spoil there. Just a fun action scene that seems in line with the high flying, swashbuckling from the previous films. From what we've seen in other trailers and heard from Peter's set visit [2], this scene is happens early in the film and one can hope that this level of goofy "realism" is prevalent throughout. That's part of what made The Curse of the Black Pearl so much better than Dead Man's Chest or At World's End. Not only was it easier to understand, it blended its fantastic elements with a physical believability. It's not "likely" that Jack Sparrow could ride a chandelier across a room, but it's more likely than fighting on a mast above a whirlpool. Plus, you can't go wrong with that Hans Zimmer theme.

Out of all the films coming out this summer, while Pirates is almost certain to be a big hit for Disney, it seems like it's being kind of overshadowed by many of the superhero movies. In all the magazines and summer movie previews, it obviously gets mentioned, but the film almost feels like an after thought or foregone conclusion. Do you agree? If so, why do you think that is?

FilmfestDC film about Scientology is a big draw

On Sunday, April 10, FilmfestDC sold out both performances at Landmark E Street in Washington of Charles ?Scientology: the Truth About a Lie?, directed by Jean-Charles Deniau.  I attended the 7:30 PM performance, and the director was present. He had a translator for his answers. Filmfest?s link for the American premier is (website url) here.  I could not find it on imdb. There is no DVD yet.

There are some scary stories about scientology and litigation in the past.  A group called the ?Cult Awareness Network?  went under after losing a suit, and when people called their number, they were answered by a scientology answer, as in this CNN story from 1996.  I remember that story appearing in the Washington Post then.

The film is in both French and English, with subtitles always in the opposite language.

The film presents the stories of several people who went into scientology in France and Denmark.  According to the people, they continually invested money into scientology until they became broke.  The details in the film are quite graphic.

The film also gives a brief biography of founder L. Ronald Hubbard; why he went from ?just? authorship to founding an ?organization? with his Dianetics is a bit of a mystery.

The movie mentions the ?billion year contracts? over numerous reincarnations, and the inner sanctums like ?Sea Org?.

There is a certain paradox: one is told one can master all knowledge, but them one has to belong to a movement and be loyal to it. My own experience is that mastering ?knowledge? is a largely solitary journey that requires freedom from the constraints (and disruptions) imposed by others.

Lizzy Caplan, Kirsten Dunst, Adam Scott and Casey Wilson to Star in Will Ferrell-produced ?Bachelorette?

[1]

The Paul Feig-directed Bridesmaids won't be opening until next weekend, but it looks like Hollywood has already taken notice of the wedding-themed female-driven comedy's mainstream appeal. Kirsten Dunst, Lizzy Caplan, Adam Scott and Casey Wilson have just signed on for Bachelorette, an indie comedy produced by Will Ferrell and Adam McKay that sounds like it could be the next Bridesmaids. Read more after the jump.

According to The Hollywood Reporter [2], Leslye Headland will be directing from her ownscript, which earned her a spot on the2008 Black List [3]. The plot"follows three best friends (two of whom would be played by Caplan and Dunst) who are invited to act as bridesmaids at the wedding of a girl they called 'Pigface' in high school." Wilson will be the bride, "who has big plans for the three women," and Scott will play Caplan's high school crush, who brings a beautiful younger woman to the wedding. The third best friend has yet to be cast.

THR describes Dunst's character as a "crisp and severe" frenemy type, but the character that really intrigues me is Caplan's "Playboy Bunny body with a Larry David mind." The "Playboy Bunny body" part sounds like show business as usual, but I can't think of a ton of female characters who have what could be described as "a Larry David mind." Caplan's already proved her comedic talents in work like Mean Girls and Party Down, so I'm really looking forward to seeing what she'll be able to do with her character.

The $3 million project is still securing financing, but if all goes well, shooting will begin in New York City this summer. Expect some more casting announcements and a title change sometime in the near future -- Bachelorette is apparently just a working title.

I'm honestly thrilled to see another female-driven comedy in the works. While male comedians like Seth Rogen, Jason Segel and Jonah Hill have hit it huge in mainstream comedies, equally talented female comedians like Caplan and the Bridesmaids gang have trailed woefully behind in the "fame and fortune" department. It's great to see projects like Bridesmaids and Bachelorette that could help close that gap. Now, if only we could get away from that persistent wedding theme...

Discuss: Plus, Adam Scott! How awesome is he?

Why 'Fast Five' Dominates Box Office A Decade After Franchise Debut

Vin Diesel, Dwayne Johnson, IMAX tickets and a dearth of action flicks helped it race to the top.
By Eric Ditzian

Paul Walker and Vin Diesel in "Fast Five"
Photo: Universal Pictures

As observers of both Hollywood and United States national security have noted, Dwayne "The Rock" Johnson has been enjoying a pretty incredible last few days. He apparently learned about Osama bin Laden's death hours before the rest of us and hinted about the news on Twitter ("Just got word that will shock the world," he wrote). Monday is his 39th birthday. Oh, and his new action flick, "Fast Five," opened to $83.6 million in ticket sales — not the biggest debut of the year but Universal's largest opening since "The Lost World: Jurassic Park" in 1997.

As remarkable as Johnson's national security sources are, perhaps even more impressive is how well "Fast Five" performed at the box office a decade after "The Fast and the Furious" first hit the multiplex. Franchises tend to max out their public good will after two or three installments, but with this new picture, there can be little doubt that the "Fast and Furious" series has joined the likes of "Die Hard" in the pop-culture establishment. Much of the credit goes to Vin Diesel, industry insiders point out.

"Like Sly Stallone as Rambo, Bruce Willis as John McClane and Arnold Schwarzenegger as the Terminator, Diesel embodies the role of Dom Toretto, fusing his public persona with his fictional character, and in doing so making him an action icon," said Jeff Bock, box-office analyst for Exhibitor Relations. "Simply put, in the pantheon of action studs, Diesel is now immortalized as Dom."

But even one iconic character can't fully explain such a mega-debut. After all, the latest "Rambo" opened to just $18.2 million in 2008, while "Live Free or Die Hard" grossed $33.4 million in 2007. Universal reinvigorated the "Fast and Furious" franchise in 2009 by bringing back not only Diesel but Paul Walker, leading to a $71 million opening (then an April record). "Fast Five," in turn, became something of a franchise all-star flick, not only with those two guys but with faces from previous installments, like Tyrese Gibson and Ludacris, plus the introduction of an action stalwart like the Rock.

What's more, box-office experts also noted a wide-open market place for a high-energy blockbuster in a year thus far largely devoid of them. "2011 got off to a very slow start, and that caused a lot of 'people aren't going to the movies anymore' talk," said Phil Contrino, editor of BoxOffice.com. "That's nonsense. Moviegoers were just hungry for reliable entertainment, and that's exactly what they got with 'Fast Five.' A movie like this needs to be seen in theaters. It doesn't deliver the same rush in your living room."

The result, Gitesh Pandya of Box Office Guru pointed out, was a PG-13 film that averaged $22,950 in 3,644 theaters, "including a record 243 IMAX sites where tickets cost as much as $19 each." That translated to an impressive 54 percent market share over the weekend.

Next weekend, the summer movie season officially kicks off with the debut of "Thor." The question for that superhero flick is how its debut will be affected by "Fast Five." Contrino notes that even though "Fast Five" will inevitably see a steep drop-off in ticket sales, "it'll still eat into a portion of 'Thor' 's business."

Or, as Bock put it, " 'Fast Five' already stole 'Thor' 's thunder." He added, "It's going to have a very difficult time matching the debut of 'Fast Five.' Dom has already dropped the hammer on the summer box office."

Check out everything we've got on "Fast Five."

Why Do They Believe In Conspiracy Theories?

According to a study, because they would do it themselves if they were in charge:
The researchers found that ?personal willingness to engage in the conspiracies predicted endorsement of conspiracy theories.? So did a propensity to manipulate others for personal gain.

?For example,? they write, ?highly Machiavellian individuals were seemingly more likely to believe that government agents staged the 9/11 attacks because they were more likely to perceive that they would do so themselves, if [they found themselves] in the government?s position.?

Indeed, we have often noted this trait among the Truthers; the belief that people would do anything for money because they themselves would do anything for money.
